Mentoring Future Managers

Every organisation recruits new professionals from time to time. The organisational growth is, ideally, interdependent on professional growth of individuals. It has been challenging yet inevitable process of orienting the newcomer to take responsibility and learn the organisational philosophy and culture to grow with. Each organisation has developed direct or indirect methods of induction for the new recruits. In many organisations there is a systematic orientation or induction program. Some organisations have a conscious plan of mentoring. It is not a new concept, but in the past it has been practiced at a more informal level. In recent times, it has become more professional and has been institutionalised.

The mentoring process seeks to:
  • Speed up the process of developing managerial talent
  • Assist in long-term career development
  • Set up informal channels of communication
  • Improve people performance
  • Offer emotional support
  • Ensure the spread of critical skills

The mentoring process benefits not only the company / organisation, but also the mentor and the mentoree, both professionally and personally. Through mentoring, the knowledge and skills get distributed within the organisation, leading to their increased application in day-to-day business. The mentoree benefits by getting access to specialised knowledge and skills, and develops confidence. Recognition brings is a sense of satisfaction; it increases the potential to move higher up the corporate ladder, in an accelerated manner.
